Canunda's Sand Test On Australia Day
27 January 2010
On Tuesday 26th January 2010 Australia Day Public Holiday, a large group of club members (nine vehicles) met at the clubrooms for a Canunda/Beach Run. The weather was fantastic, and everyone was eager to get started, so we knew that it was going to be a top day.
The group headed off at 10:10AM on the bitumen via a toilet and food gathering stop in Millicent to start our journey at South End.
We were pretty soon onto white metal roads, which was where I made a minor stuff up and missed the correct turn off, so we came to a lookout and I thought it would be an ideal place to let the tyres down. (good save I thought!)
We cruised along quite nicely and it wasn’t long before we got to Bevlaqua Ford, where we all enjoyed our lunch and the kids raced up the sand dunes, while the adults watched. Two bigger kids, Matty G and Darren had a little (and I mean little) play with their sand boards, but it did provided some nice entertainment with some of their ‘stacks’. It was also here that Luke announced “that it wouldn’t be Australia Day without a BBQ” and we all thanked Tony for bringing a Jeep!
As we left the dunes, we headed to the beach and were cruising along some reasonably soft sections of beach until someone got stuck.
Adrian’s Prado was bellied out a bit, but after a bit of help, we were mobile again and took the next beach exit and went on inland tracks for a while.
It wasn’t long until we missed the sea and went back to it, and Daniel in his Landcruiser got stuck on another soft section, so I went ahead of him to pull him out, but the Prado sunk down quickly, and I was stuck too. With assistance from Neville and Tony we were both out very quickly and off we went again.
Continuing on, we drove all the way around the Carpenter Rocks lighthouse on the beach, and then back on the bitumen for a short run down to Livingstone Bay, and back on the beach to Nene Valley. We had a 5 minute stop for a flushable toilet at Bec’s Mum and Dad’s house, and we drove back on the beach and cruised all the way around to Cape Douglas, and had a bit of a play at a tricky hill.
We finally ran out of beach when we got to Finger Point which was where we pumped up the tyres for the journey home.
Some decided to grab Fish and Chips from shop at Port MacDonnell and had tea on the foreshore, whilst others headed for home, so we said our goodbyes and went our various ways.
We would like to thank everyone that came along for making it an awesome day.
Cheers,
Mat, Bec, Teesh and Lockie Williamson.
