Canunda Night Sand Boarding

Canunda Night RunEverybody must have been hanging out to lock in the hubs and go for a drive after the Christmas /new years break. It was arranged to meet at the club rooms on Saturday arvo and travel together to Carpenters Rocks. Along for the trip were the Wehrmann, Goetze, O’Donnell and  Sagirov families as well as Trev Buckell and his neighbours. We were met along the way by the Neills, Guenthers and Stolls.  We aired down at the usual spot at the entrance to Canunda and headed off for some fun in the sand.

The main track was in decent condition and so we followed that for most of the time. We decided to drive on the beach for a bit and as I was trip leader I followed the beach access track. Trev was close behind and decided to follow a different track along with everyone behind him. After backtracking a bit everyone found me on the beach and nominated the trip leader to tackle the beach first.  With little effort the mighty Patrol made its way up the beach and out the exit. Most other vehicles made light work of the beach except for Matty whose tyres hadn’t really bagged and therefore spun in the sand making it an effort for him to get off the beach. Nothing a little less air in the tyres couldn’t fix.   By now the girls and kids were getting hungry so we decided to stop at the Number 2 rocks camp ground for dinner. Back on the road and all the kids could think about was sand boarding. Trip leader was again nominated to tackle another beach and after traveling up and not being to get out the exit it was decided to stick to the track.

Wolfy had a go at the beach as well sticking low and telling me how easy it was until he hit the soft stuff and had to put in a major effort to get out. By now the kids were really keen to sand board so we headed for the Lake Bonney lookout and used the dunes there to show how uncoordinated we all were.  The kids and some of the kids at heart were tackling the dunes on anything from proper sand boards to laminex and boogey boards with everyone well and truly knocked up from walking up and sliding down the dunes. By now it was getting quite dark so we got back in the cars and found the track. The rest of the night was pretty uneventful. We stuck to the track until we exited Canunda at Millicent where Wolf discovered he had a flat tyre and an oil leak. From there we headed home after a stop at Maccas, everyone exhausted from the sand boarding and looking forward to the next trip.

Cheers, Luke.
