Simpson Desert Exploration
26 July 2009
John and Ronda decided to defer their trip to the Hay River and instead headed off with the Blacks and the Pools to cross the Simpson Desert and explore the East MacDonnell Ranges. The first day was a biggy making it from the Mount Gambier all the way to Leigh Creek where we rewarded ourselves with a bed in a motel.
On the way our convoy increased by one as “Tim from Tassie” joined in our radio chatter and kept chatting, and chatting all the way to Leigh Creek. Nice enough bloke on his way to meet up with friends in Birdsville but travelling alone and definitely looking for someone to talk to.
From Leigh Creek to Birdville, stopping off at Furina and Mungerannie and the next day we headed for “Big Red” and the start of the Simpson. If you’re wondering about the intro photo, “Mog the Dog” was “removed” from his home in Pinnaroo much to his owners distress and has taken a 12 month sebatical. So far he’s been to Perth, I believe Fiji and as you can see across the Simpson. He’ll be returned to his owner, along with a photo album after his 12 months of travelling. After crossing the desert we visited Mount Dare, Old Andado, Alice Springs and then headed off to the East Mc Donnell Ranges. More to see but... next time.
